One day National Webinar on “Understanding the Dark Web and how it factors into Cyber Security” was organised by the Department of Information Technology on 28th October, 2020. The objective of the webinar was to create awareness among faculty and students of MAIT and other colleges about the hidden arena of web which, though provides an extra layer of privacy, also opens up gates for plethora of illegal activities.
The event started at 5 pm with brief inaugural ceremony. Saraswati vandana was played in online mode to pay tributes to the Goddess of knowledge, mother Saraswati. This was followed by inaugural welcome address by Director- Prof. (Dr.) Neelam Sharma. She motivated the students and faculty members with her encouraging words and enlightening thoughts. She highlighted the importance of such activities mainly in times of pandemic when we all aspire for motivational and inspirational sessions. She thanked the Guest speaker- Prof. (Dr.) Himadri Nath Saha for sparing his valuable time for the benefit of faculty and students alike. The inaugural ceremony was followed by technical session by the Guest speaker Prof. (Dr.) Himadri Nath Saha.
The technical session was followed by the ‘vote of thanks’ given by Prof. (Dr.) M.L. Sharma, HoD, Information Technology. The event concluded at 7.30 pm.
The technical session was of two hours. The session highlighted the dark side of the
Internet- the Dark web. Topics such as Tor browser, Onion routing and I2P networks were discussed. Live demonstration of Onion routing with Tor browser was given which immediately grasped the attention of the audience. Prof. Saha also discussed how the illegal activities in Dark web can be prevented. He concluded his talk with future research directions to the audience. The session was very lively as the topics were explained with the help of animations and video clips. The audience appreciated the talk. The technical session was concluded with the question and answer round.
The webinar was conceived and executed with the coordination among various entities. The inspiration behind the event were the chief patrons- Dr. Nand Kishore Garg, Founder and Chief Advisor, MATES, Delhi and Chancellor, MAU, HP, Shri. Goyal, Vice Chairman (Academics), MATES, Delhi and Prof. (Dr.) Neelam Sharma Director, MAIT, Delhi. The Chief Advisors to the event- Prof. (Dr.) S. S. Deswal, Dean, MAIT, Delhi and Prof. (Dr.) M. L. Sharma, HOD, IT looked that the event was carried out with established norms of the institute. Prof.(Dr.) Amita Goel, IT Dept. and Dr. K.C.Tripathi, IT Dept. were the conveners. Prof. (Dr.) Sunil Kumar, HOD, ECE, Prof. (Dr.), R.S. Gupta, Professor, ECE, Prof. (Dr.) V.N. The event was a great success with over 550 registrations from Delhi, UP, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand and West Bengal. The participants were from across the domain ranging from engineering and management to applied science and law. The session was conducted on Microsoft teams and streamed on Google meet. The You-tube link of the recorded video along with the presentation slides is sent to all participants.
Owing to the success of the event the IT department plans to organize many more such events.
